Sierra Leone: Good Governance Gets Big Boost

The state of Governance in Africa and in Sierra Leone is to be examined by multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary experts at a national seminar at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown.

President Ernest Bai Koroma will officially launch the two-day seminar scheduled for February 20 and 21 and jointly organized by the Government of Sierra Leone, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and the African Development Bank, Representatives of the Central and local Governments, Parliament, the public and private sectors, Civil Society, Academic and Development Partners will discuss various aspects of Governance.

The objectives of the seminar are to present the state of Governance in Africa and the results of Sierra Leone in the 2013 Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance and support the strengthening of good governance in Sierra Leone. At the same time, the African Development Bank will also provide an effective platform to promote its strategy of good economic and financial governance in regional member countries and Sierra Leone, in particular, and popularize the Governance Framework and Action Plan 11 (GAP 11) of the Bank of Sierra Leone.

The seminar Participants will discuss and exchange ideas on key Governance issues to be presented by the Government of Sierra Leone, the Mo Ibrahim Index and the African Development Bank all geared towards enhancing the on-going programme of reforms in the field of Governance by the Government of President Ernest Bai Koroma.

At the same time, the two-day Governance seminar will include the launching of the two complementary programmes, namely, "The pay no Bribe Campaign" and the "Open Government Partnership Consultative Process" to demonstrate the Government of Sierra Leone's continued commitment to promote transparency and accountability in the public sector.

African Governance provides a comprehensive framework for citizens, public authorities and partners to assess the effective delivery of public goods and services and their management in the four main categories of security and the rule of law; Participation and Human Rights, including gender; Sustainable Economic Opportunity and Human Development.
